Chelsea Youth Theatre

Macbeth
Collaborative production of Macbeth

The Chelsea Youth Theatre had its inception in 1997 as an intensive summer program. The program included classes in acting, voice, movement, and improvisation, a production workshop which focused on designing and building the sets, props, and costumes for their own production, and rehearsals. The program culminated in performances of an adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream. TheatreZone also partnered with Shakespeare & Co. and the Chelsea Public Schools to bring educational programming into Chelsea's schools, beginning with a production of MacBeth. TheatreZone is proud to have played a crucial role in bringing this ongoing program to Chelsea High School.

The summer 2002 program included 2 sessions of the performance project, the first producing Degas, C'est Moi and Jackie and the Beanstalk, and the second wrote and perfomed their own original play, Maladie. In the fall we expanded to include classes for ages 5-19, as well as continuing the performance project with a production of Eleemosynary.

With our move to the Chelsea Theatre Works we have expanded opportunities for youth to apprentice and intern with TheatreZone, working with professional directors, stage managers, and designers, or participating in productions as actors. The components are designed to give young people the opportunity to relate to the program on various levels: participants can be involved on a short term basis, and for those who choose to be involved on an on-going basis there are increasing opportunities as they progress.
