In Durrenmatt's tragic comedy, billionaire Claire Zachanassian returns to the destitute home town she left in disgrace 45 years ago, bent on exacting retribution on the true love who betrayed her. At first the indignant citizens reject her offer of cash for a corpse. They talk importantly of their town's cultural and humane traditions. But when they start buying new shoes, cognac, minks, cars- and all on credit- there is only one way to meet the bills....
The Visit is staged environmentally in multiple locations, and the audience moves with the action as our "most popular citizen" bolts for the train station and the family takes their first and final drive.
The works of the Swiss playwright Friedrich Durrenmatt (1921-1990) combine surface realism with an absurd and almost surreal artistic vision. His plays include Romulus der Grosse (adapted by Gore Vidal as Romulus), and The Physicists.
