The Handless Maiden

by Jeremy Dobrish

The Handless Maiden

Once upon a time a few weeks ago there lived a Miller with his Wife and Maiden Daughter at the edge of an Enchanted Forest. Through no fault of their own, the family had fallen on difficult times. One day as the Miller was in search of provisions for his family, he happened upon a Dark Mysterious Man who offered him great riches in exchange for a seeming trifle. Could this be all the shadowy figure wanted from the unsuspecting Miller?

Thus begins Grimms' Fairy Tale of need, greed, and impetuous deeds. But what happens when the magical tale meets the equally fantastical realities of 1998? The Handless Maiden tells the story of two contemporary lost souls who cross paths with this darkly comic fairy tale world. Devils, Wizards, and cross-country treks combine in this humorous and touching story of the human need for a happy ending. The Handless Maiden is making it's regional debut in Boston after a sold-out New York run at the Adobe Theatre Company.

'Crafty intermingling of folklore, musical comedy, and soap opera.' Peter Marks, The New York Times

'In his inimitable, quirky style, playwright Jeremy Dobrish delivers once againÑ this time a darkly tinged comic fantasy...an incredibly clear work that delivers mightily on a broad comic level yet still leaves room for sentiment.' Sam Whitehead, TimeOut New York

Jeremy Dobrish is the Artistic Director of the adobe theatre company which he co-founded in 1991.
