an explosive, deeply affecting study of alienation and the redemptive power of love

Danny and Roberta collide -hostile and desperate- in a dive in the Bronx. Danny's co-workers call him "The Beast" and his out-of-control emotions may have driven him to murder. Roberta's dark past has turned her into a self-loathing 30-year-old with no foreseeable future. They strike up a conversation over a beer in a bar, spend the night together, and so begins their funny, frightening and ultimately fascinating relationship.

Danny and the Deep Blue Sea received its professional premiere at Actors Theatre of Louisville in February 1984, and in June 1984, it opened at the Circle in the Square Theatre in New York City with John Turturro winning the Obie award for his outstanding performance. The piece is native New Yorker John Patrick Shanley's first published play. Other works include Savage in Limbo and The Dreamer Examines His Pillow. His film works include Five Corners, Alive, Congo, Crossing Delancey, Joe Versus the Volcano and Moonstruck which earned him an Oscar and the Writers Guild Award for the screenplay.

Danny and the Deep Blue Sea is the fourth offering in TheatreZone's Actor's Revenge, a festival of actor selected plays, and is playing in repertory with The Zoo Story by Edward Albee. This fall we invited actors to submit proposals for a production they would star in, which were judged by a panel of fellow actors and audience regulars solely on the quality of the actor's past work and their passion for the production. Now, for the first time, some of the finest actors who have worked with TheatreZone over the years have a chance to call the shots! They pick the play, the director, the approach, and cast themselves in the role of their dreams.

Actress Anna Waldron (Cooking with Elvis) will play Roberta in Danny and the Deep Blue Sea. She chose the role in part because she loves John Patrick Shanley's writing, and in keeping with the spirit of the festival, it's a roles she'd never be cast in. At a fresh faced 23, she is more often cast as "the daughter." Roberta is a thoroughly spent 31 year old- abused, rough, fearful, and violent.

Anna chose recent Boston College graduate Matthew Kossack to direct. Matthew is an actor/director, and on a completely irrelevant note, he was a competitive ice dancer for 10 years, National Champion, and North American Champion. The playwright describes the play as an Apache Dance, so who knows if the ice dancing background will come in handy.
