Blood Wedding

by Frederico Garcia Lorca

TheatreZone celebrates the Lorca Centenial with his masterpiece of love and betrayal.

Based on a true story of love, lust, and betrayal, Blood Wedding is one of the most powerful and innovative plays written this century. Federico Garcia Lorca wrote his best known play years after reading a newspaper account of a young bride in Andalusia who abandoned her husband-to-be on their wedding day to escape with her childhood sweetheart. Lorca evokes the spectacle of human passion through sophisticated and often surrealistic poetic technique, elevating the love story to a tragedy of fate.

Lorcašs public image as a revolutionary artist and his private life as a homosexual made him a political symbol, and his plays shocked theatergoers with their explicit overtones of forbidden love and freedom of thought. August 9, 1936, soon after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, Franco's Fascists dragged the Spanish poet and playwright into a field, shot him, and tossed his body into an unmarked grave. Franco's government tried to obliterate Lorca's memory. His books were prohibited, his name forbidden. Since then he has become the most-translated Spanish writer in history, widely recognized as poet of genius and possibly the foremost poetic dramatist of our time.

1998 will mark the Centennial of Lorcašs birth. In commemoration the Spanish Government has established a National Commission which is coordinating an extensive and varied program of activities in the fields of poetry, theater, music, dance, and the visual arts. Highlights include the production of two documentary films and the filming of Lorca's only film script, two new productions of Blood Wedding, a traveling theater group that will carry his plays and poetry to towns and cities across Spain throughout the year, and the opening of the Federico Garcia Lorca Theater. Significant event programs are also being planned around the world in countries such as Japan, Cuba, Belgium, Germany, England, Argentina, Australia, and the United States. TheatreZone is thrilled to join in the celebration of Lorcašs life and work.
